(S5) .455 Colt New Service Revolver Retailed By Westley Richards & Co. 5½ ins barrel with blade front sight, double-action with fluted 6 shot cylinder, chequered Colt grips, the blued back strap inscribed Lt. Col. G. Glyn N. Som. Y. (North Somerset Yeomanry) with blue lanyard, no. 75440

Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Carr Glyn (1864-1933) fought in the Boer War as a Captain in the Rhodesian Regiment where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1901. He was Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor in the Transvaal, promoted to the rank of Major in the North Somerset Yeomanry in 1904, and later appointed Military Secretary to the Governor of Madras in 1906.

The North Somerset Yeomanry were mobilised on 4th August 1914 under the command of Lt.Col. Glyn at the outbreak of the First World War, and by November 1914 were engaged on the Western Front. He was one of many wounded on 13th May 1915 at Bellewaarde Lake near Ypres, and on return served in administrative and reserve roles for the Territorial Force.

Lt.Col. G.C.Glyn, DSO was mentioned in despatches four times, appointed to the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in 1916, and in 1918 made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order. He maintained a presence in social circles post-war, and died in Gibraltar in 1933.

Condition Report

Retains good blued finish throughout, although this is patched with various spots of corrosion. Action crisp, bore looks clean with no visible pitting or deterioration.

Access to the saleroom is by catalogue only, priced at £10.00 (admits two). Identification may be required, and the auctioneers reserve the right to refuse access at their discretion. Condition reports:
Requests for condition reports may be submitted by email or directly through the online catalogue.

We regret that we are unable to process requests for condition reports received after 5pm on the day preceding the sale.

This is a live auction with both in-room and online bidding.

• In-room bidding is available at the above location on sale day.
• Commission bids may be submitted prior to the start of the sale, in person or through the website.
• Telephone bids may be offered on lots with an estimate over £500, subject to availability.
• Online bidding is available through the auction platforms found via the 'Live Online' button in the 'How to bid' section at the top of the page.

Prospective buyers will need to register with the auctioneer for in-person or commission bidding, or via the relevant platform for online bidding.

Hammer price:
This is the bid amount you offered to the auctioneer for any given lot which is accepted at the fall of the hammer.

Buyers’ premium:
A buyers’ premium at 17.5% plus VAT, will be added to the hammer price of each lot.

Online fee:
Lots purchased online also attract a platform fee of 5% plus VAT.

VAT on hammer price:
Some lots in our sales are sold by VAT registered vendors and we are therefore also required to charge VAT on the hammer price of these particular lots. Please refer to “+VAT” in descriptions in the catalogue and information in the ‘additional fee’ box when bidding.

All VAT is charged at the current rates, as applicable to the fees or lots being sold.

Collection:
From the W&H Peacock Saleroom on sale day from 12pm until 5pm.
From the Southams Administration Office the following Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 3pm.

Any collection times other than the above are by appointment only, directly with the auctioneers.

The auctioneers may charge storage on items not cleared by the final collection time stated above or, at their discretion, may resell uncollected lots in an appropriate sale, subject to standard commission charges, without informing the original purchaser and without refunding their payment.

Attention is drawn to the Auctioneers Conditions of Sale. In particular, it is emphasised that all accounts must be settled on the day of sale. Please always remember that the lots purchased are at your own risk from the fall of the hammer, it is therefore in your own interest to get everything paid and collected as soon as possible.

Lots prefixed (S1): Purchasers will require the appropriate Firearms (S1) or RFD Certificate.

Lots prefixed (S2): Purchasers will require the appropriate Shotgun (S2) or RFD Certificate.

Lots prefixed (S5): Purchasers will require Section 5 Authority or Section 1 or 2 certificate with the appropriate condition.

Lots prefixed (S37): Realistic imitation firearms including Airsoft/Replicas/Blank-Firing Firearms that are labelled. Purchasers will require proof of a defence under Section 37 of the VCR Act 2006 before they can be handed over or shipped to the buyer.

Lots prefixed (S58): Antique or Obsolete Calibre weapons that do not require a licence to hold provided the purchaser fully complies with the Terms of Sale (see Section 18).
